Fun, Warm, and "Unico"
Lilli
Curtis is an Alumna of KDChi's Upsilon Chapter at Southerm Methodist University. She graduated with Spanish and a minor in Psychology, both of which play a role in getting hired in her current position. She considers a couple of places as her home towns, Guadalajara,
Jalisco, Mexico and/or Nashville Tennessee. She currently lives in Dallas, Texas and is studying Spanish. Lets shine the spotlight on Lili Curtis. Where do you work? I'm an Assistant Director, Music and Movement teacher at the Saturday School, Character Counts teacher Summer Day Camp. As a teacher and assistant director for this outreach program I am in charge of making sure the kids are happy, having a good time and are learning how to be the best kiddos they can be.
How did you get your job? I
looked through the “Wanted Ads” in the campus newspaper and applied
for the job and being bilingual helped me land it.
Are you currently using your undergrad degree? Yes, I do have to translate many documents into Spanish and being
bilingual, I'm also the go-to person for the Spanish-speaking parents.
Best/most challenging memory of college
experience? Best:
Getting to take the courses I wanted to take and joining KDChi. Challenge: The culture shock.
Best/most challenging life moment? Best:
Daily, at work when the kids run up and hug me at the start of the day
has to be one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Worst: Those
misfortunes of life, such as sickness and death of loved ones that come
around every once in a while. What didn't you know about the working world that you wish you would've been told? How to balance priorities once work is added to it, and also you have to stay on your toes because no amount of training will prepare you for every little thing that might come up.
What do you do for fun? Why did you join KDChi?
I joined KDChi so that when I was on campus I wouldn't feel so
isolated, being a young woman who was not your typical "gringa".
Physically I fit in on an American campus but culturally not at all and
KDChi offered that to me as well as friendship and dedication to Christ
and serving the community. My sisters are my family away
from home.
What should people understand about KDChi from outside of the sisterhood?
Just that, it's a sisterhood not a typical sorority. I know that my
sisters have my back and my best interests in mind. They love me, don't judge me and we're one another's chosen family.
Favorite volunteer experience? I love serving dinner at the Salvation Army on Sunday nights.
Share something about yourself that no one knows?
I sleep so hard during naps that when I wake up I am so out of it
that if I don't have a piece of chocolate right after I wake up it
takes me twice as long to wake up.If you had to describe KDChi in three words, what would you say? Your favorite motivational quote? "I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go". Abraham Lincoln If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?I would go to South Africa because I have never been there and don’t really know anything about it and would like to learn. It would be completely new and exciting! Anything amazing happen or will be happening to you soon? Life has happened and that has been an amazing adventure thus far and I hope that in the future it continues to be so. |

What was the most valuable lesson from KDChi that you use in your profession
now? I
learned from one of my sisters, Jaz Alvarado, that you get out of an
experience what you put into it. If you don’t put any energy or love
into what you do you won’t get anything from it.
Why did you join KDChi?
"I'm witnessing history and wouldn't trade it…
"No one becomes poor by…
