KAPPA DELTA CHI, ETA CHAPTER
ADVISOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
“Our Treasure”

Canyon, TX – (May 1, 2010) Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., Eta Chapter, is pleased to inform our sisters of one of our greatest achievements this year. On April 23, 2009 our Advisor and sister Victoria Salas received the Outstanding Advisor of the Year Award on our campus. She was in the top three against some of the advisors from large organizations at West Texas A&M University, but due to all of her hard work and the success she has contributed to our Chapter she was given recognition. She deserves this recognition above all for all of the great things she has done. We are proud to be a part of her life. The nomination essay written by our Active Members gave West Texas A&M a clear view of why Victoria Salas is the best Advisor and sister:

“Three years ago Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc., Eta Chapter was given a second chance at West Texas A&M University. Through various struggles and numerous attempts to raise our fallen organization we found a treasure, a unique irreplaceable treasure. Our Advisor, Victoria Salas, has given the young ladies of Kappa Delta Chi the courage to fight the battles that we encounter and the opportunity to grow as an organization and as sisters. She has shown us the true power of service and sisterhood.

Victoria Salas was a part of the elite group of young women who brought Kappa Delta Chi to our campus in the Spring of 1993. After graduating with her undergraduate degree, she became the first Alumni for the Eta Chapter of Kappa Delta Chi. She has stayed involved in and vigorously supportive of Kappa Delta Chi ever since. Her active support, advice, and service have pushed us to be superior sisters and vigorous community members.

Victoria has stayed with us through the ups and downs of our organization and it is inspiring to think that she is not only an amazing advisor but also an exceptional sister. We value her wisdom and her willingness to help us become leaders of a large diverse campus. She is always ready to share her knowledge and we can always count on her to guide us till the end.

After being asked to give a brief statement of her love for Kappa Delta Chi and her excitement for being our advisor she stated, “I am very close to my sisters – we have gone on to share many of life’s changes together celebrating marriages, births, career moves and even stood by each other through sad times; deaths, divorces, and disappointment… through it all, none of us would probably have become friends if not for Kappa Delta Chi. …  For me the sisterhood is a very special part of my life and I am not sure I could leave it behind even it I tried, because I am so intertwined. Being asked to be the advisor is such a privilege… because I have come full circle from where I began. It has truly enriched my life and brought back so many good memories as well as allowed me to create new ones.”

She is an advisor, but more than that she is a friend and a true sister. She has opened up her home and her heart for all of the girls of Kappa Delta Chi. We genuinely believe that Victoria Salas is the glue that holds our organization together. The most heartwarming part of this wonderful story is knowing that she stands in our shadow giving us the strength and the support,  yet when we are praised she lets us stand in the spotlight as she proudly looks from behind the scene. She is our treasure, a treasure that we were fortunate to come upon… a treasure we will never give up. Without a doubt Victoria Salas deserves it all. Victoria, an elite woman willing to give love, share knowledge, and never give up. The perfect example for the current ladies of Kappa Delta Chi, and the future hope of our organization.”

It was the most exciting thing to see Victoria receive this exceptional award. Congratulations to our sister one of our best and an elite part of our sisterhood!

KDChi Pi Chapter hosts Success LLD
Kappa Delta Chi Pi Chapter Hosts Successful Longhorn Leaders Day

For Immediate Release:

April 26, 2010 (Austin, TX) Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc is proud to announce that it's Award Winning, Pi Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin hosted their Annual Longhorn Leaders Day (LLD) conference on Saturday April 23rd. The theme for this year's event was inspired by the quote:

"Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll still land amongst the stars."

lld2010_group_photo.jpg That quote KDChi describes women that have broken down barriers and become successful in their chosen careers without giving up on their aspirations.

LLD is a conference geared towards young women who are emerging leaders in the community. This conference provides an opportunity for young women to learn more about high school and college life. High school students attended workshops geared towards college prep
aration including the do's and don'ts about filling out college applications, financial aid, resume building and acquiring recommendation letters. Middle school students attended workshops geared towards self-discovery and independence.

Notable UT faculty, KDChi alumni and honorary women throughout our community coordinated and lead the workshops. Finally, there was a panel discussion, where successful women from all backgrounds answered questions about their experience and shared personal stories. Breakfast and Lunch were provided.

Viridiana Medellin is a KDCHi sister who took on the role of planning the annual event and shared the following, "Kappa Delta Chi prides itself on producing, enhancing, and cultivating leadership. The following letter is from a parent of a young lady who attended the conference and I just wanted to share it with you all to see the impact that we all made Saturday. I couldn't say it enough how grateful I was for all of the support. It is events like this that make us the sorority that we are."

Subject: Thank You

Dear Viridiana,

Thank you for all your time which was devoted to the Longhorn Leaders Day. Rebekkah told me that she is able to use the information from the workshops, panelists, and interaction. I especially liked the panelists. Perhaps they were more meaningful to the parents, as I could totally relate to their stories in many aspects.

Both Rebekkah and I didn't know what to expect. As with some organizations, there is a tendency to be "a lot of fluff" and no real substance. Again, thank you for your dedication and down-to-earth outreach program.

Sincerely,
Barbara Sheridan"

Not only did the chapter produce such a terrific event, they also were awarded Latino Leadership Council's *Best Unity Award* of all Multicultural Greek Council & the coordinator of the LLD program Viridiana Medellin won the Bravo Award for *Best Role Model*.

KDChi, Delta sister Reflects on her CHCI internship in Wash DC
KDChi, Delta's Karen Quintana chosen as CHCI blogger

April 20, 2010

"I'm witnessing history and wouldn't trade it for the world"

ACS logo-eng&SpnKaren Quintana is a Delta Chapter sister (Alpha Eta Class) who's in Washington DC interning with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) in the officers of Congressman Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX). She's majoring in Political Science with minors in Psychology & Spanish. There's so much on her to do list, but she's keeping an open mind about where she'll be in the future. She's originally from Sinaloa, Mexico and plans to graduate in the Spring 2011. She's been chosen as a featured blogger on the CHCI website and was also spotlighted on the KDChi national website. Let the spotlight shine on Ms. Karen Quintana who departs back to Tucson, Arizona this Saturday after completing the inaugural Spring Internship program with CHCI.

Recess and Stress by Karen Quintana:
"The stress of DC can be seen on the faces of staff members on the Hill. It is easy to get caught up in work that we do and we forget how to relax. I know that as an undergraduate, I am constantly on the go from class to work to meetings. It's both emotionally and physically exhausting. As an intern, there is also stress, especially when the office is busy. There are deadlines and certain expectations we each need to meet. The best way to relax is to talk about it. Luckily, all of us interns are really close. We are able to confide with each other about things that we go through on a daily basis. Also, exploring the city is one of my favorite aspects of life in DC. We can just jump on the metro and head to different parts of the city and have new adventures. My favorite thing to do here is trying new foods since the city is filled with different cultures so we explore new places to eat and the different cultures of the city. Never in my life have I tried so many different kinds of food than in the past couple of months. For instance, we have had Cuban, Salvadorian, Spanish, Dominican, Moroccan, and Ethiopian foods. Although our stress does not compare to those of our co-workers in the office, we are still able to observe and absorb some of the stress that comes from working in DC.

Karen Quintana on the HillI feel extremely supported while I'm here. Although my family and friends aren't here, I have already built a support network with my fellow interns, co-workers, and KDChi sisters in the area. I reached out on the KDChi Facebook page and was able to meet so many sisters! They are all doing amazing things and are definitely upholding KDChi values. They inspire me everyday."

Kappa Delta Chi prides itself on our focus on community service, developing strong leaders who excel at every aspect of their collegiate and professional lives and our strong network of multicultural women. We thank you for your continued support of our sisterhood and its' mission to enact positive change.
